The Most Rev. John P. Dolan

Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix

Bishop John P. Dolan, the fifth bishop of the diocese of Phoenix, has a heart for those suffering with mental illness. Just four months after becoming installed as bishop, he opened the diocese’s first mental health Ministry on Dec. 13, 2022. He has lost three siblings and a brother-in-law to suicide which has contributed to his urgency in addressing the mental health crisis. The Office of Mental Health Ministry has created a space of hospitality and healing with an emphasis on education, accompaniment, and advocacy. “Jesus meets the woman at the well and not only holiness happens from that, wholeness happens from that, wellness happens from that,” Bishop Dolan shares, “The idea is that we gather, and we accompany one another”. Bishop Dolan has also instituted the annual Mass of Remembrance for people who have died by suicide which is held on Sept. 4th. He has co-authored two books and continues to speak on mental health.
